• The Charleroi girls basketball team defeated Brownsville in a classic buzzer beater. With just six seconds remaining on the clock and the score tied at 44, Jenn Crabb rushed the length of the court, darted around a screen from teammate Lauren Dumm and floated a shot just as the buzzer sounded. Crabb paced Charleroi with 26 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, to help give her team a 4644 victory over the Falcons to open Section 5-AA play. Junior guard Heather Collins added 11 points.
• With the PIAA moving to four classes, four local high school baseball teams will be affected. Ringgold has moved up to Class AAAA, while Belle Vernon Area, Elizabeth Forward and Yough will move up to Class AAA. Ringgold will be facing six new Section 1 rivals in Albert Gallatin, Connellsville, Hempfield, Latrobe, Norwin and Penn-Trafford. Belle Vernon and Elizabeth Forward will be joined in Section 4 by three newcomers in Thomas Jefferson, Uniontown and West Mifflin. Yough is in Section 2 with three former rivals, Mt. Pleasant, Derry Area and Southmoreland.

• Scratch Belle Vernon Area from the unbeaten list. The Leps blew a 14-point halftime lead in a 71-68 exhibition game loss to Derry. A disappointed BVA coach Bill Wiltz said, “It was a case of us getting cold and them getting hot. We took it easy after getting a big lead.” It didn’t help that the Leps Vince Graham picked up his fourth foul with three minutes left in the third period. Graham, who scored 18 points in the first half, finished with 22 points. Kasey McIntyre led the Leps with 26 points, 15 in the second half.
• The Charleroi boys basketball team is in uncharted waters under the guidance of Coach Mickey Hornack. So far the message has been, “come on in, the water is fine!” The Cougars are off to a perfect start for the season, it is the first time the Cougars have been 4-0 in Hornack’s eight seasons at their helm. The Cougars continued their streak with a 6057 win over Section 4 rival Carmichaels.
