Trey Cabbage’s short stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates ended Tuesday when the outfielder/first baseman cleared unconditional release waivers and was released from their roster.
Cabbage is pursuing an opportunity to play in Japan, where he is expected to sign with the Yomiuri Giants of the Nippon Professional Baseball League.
Cabbage, 27, batted .209/.245/.331 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 15 RBIs in his major league career, split between 23 games with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023 and the Houston Astros last season.
The Pirates claimed the left-handed hitter off waivers from the Astros on Nov. 4, but acquired another lefty bat last week in first baseman Spencer Horwitz from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz and lefty prospects Michael Kennedy and Josh Hartle.
The Pirates now have 36 players on their 40-man roster.
Yankees acquire Bellinger from Cubs
NEW YORK (AP) — Outfielder Cody Bellinger was acquired by the New York Yankees from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday for right-hander Cody Poteet. Chicago will send the Yankees $5 million as part of the trade.
The 29-year-old Bellinger, whose father Clay helped the Yankees win World Series titles in 1999 and 2000, could play center field next year as Aaron Judge returns to right following the departure of Juan Soto to the Mets. Bellinger also can play first base, a position that opened when Anthony Rizzo became a free agent.
