• The PIAA recently released its enrollment figures and Monessen falls near the bottom of the list. According to the figures released, Monessen has only 94 boys and 93 girls enrolled in grades 9-11. That leaves only four public schools Avella (66), Mapletown (77), Cornell (80) and Union (82) with fewer boys enrolled.
• Belle Vernon Area had no trouble rolling past Waynesburg in Section 4-3A, breezing to a 66-39 win. The Leps (5-1, 2-0) jumped out to an 18-10 first quarter lead as Kaitlyn Slagus scored 13 of her game-high 20 points. In the second quarter, BVA outscored Waynesburg, 20-2, to take a 38-12 lead as Bria Rathway scored 12 of her 17 points. Slagus had 14 rebounds to cap a double-double for Belle Vernon. Lyndsey Huhn led Waynesburg with 13 points while Kerilyn Wilkins added 11 points.
2004
• The Monessen High/Serra Catholic girls basketball rivalry resumes. The two teams will meet under relatively different circumstances. After meeting in the WPIAL playoffs for the last two years, this time the two schools will face one another in the regular season for the first time. Both teams are now in Class 1A’s Section 3. Greyhounds coach Major Corley said, “It’s the first time that they’re coming down here and I’ve never played a game at Serra, so it’s something brand new.” Eagles coach Bill Cleary agrees, “Absolutely, this is new territory for both of us.”
• One of the longest winning streaks in Monessen High history has come to an end. It ended at 21 games when the Greyhounds dropped a 67-63 decision to visiting Canon- McMillan. The Hounds couldn’t overcome a bad second quarter when the Big Macs outscored Monessen, 23-9, to take a 38-23 halftime lead. Perriel Pearson had a gamehigh 22 points for the Greyhounds followed by Kelly Mornak with 16. Charisse Bassett added 9 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Monessen.
1994
• S omething happened to Belle Vernon on its way to an easy Section 3-3A win over East Allegheny. The Leps held a comfortable 52-37 lead going into the fourth quarter when the lights went out. When they came back on, East Allegheny had won the game 72-59. The hosts outscored Belle Vernon, 35-7, in the final period. The Leps were led by Renee Matz with 15 points and 7 steals. Carrie Marshall delivered 12 points and 6 assists. Terry Sellaro grabbed 15 rebounds.
