Owen ‘Sonny’ Cook – Fayette City
Owen Cook, affectionately known as “Sonny,” 81, of Fayette City, traded his cross for his crown peace fully on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024. He was born March 1, 1943, in Rowland, N.C., to the late Laura R. Bridgers Cook and Jerome Cook Sr. At a young age, Sonny moved to Washington, D.C., where he became a man of substance, working hard owning his own janitorial business. It wasn’t until he met this fine redbone firecracker that talked this city man into moving to this little old town called “Monessen.” He adapted very well to his new home. Everyone knew who “Sonny Cook” was. With his entrepreneurial spirit, he came and opened up a fish store in Donora, all while working at Guttman Oil. Leaving Guttman’s after several years, he started working for PennDOT. Here is where he used to call himself “a roadman.” Years later after the fish store closed, he found a better opportunity to provide for his family with Local 798 Pipeliners Union. This is where he retired after working 27 years. Sonny was a man of profound faith, boundless love and exceptional devotion to his family. He was known for his great sense of humor, kind heart, and wisdom. Sonny was a source of strength and inspiration to all who knew him. He is survived by five daughters, Owennetta Hamrick of Houston, Texas, Veronica Osgood of Dallas, Texas, Doris Cook of Charlotte, N.C., Ingrid Cook-Moravitz (Ben) of Sewickley, Pa., and Chevonne Stover-Brooks (Purnell) of Smithon, Pa.; and two sons, his namesake, Owen Cook Jr. (Miranda) of Dallas, and Markell Cook of East Pittsburgh. He’s also survived by one sister, Charlene “Bubba” Burnett (Duane) of Spotsylvania, Va.; one brother, Jerome Cook Jr. of Conway, S.C.; and a very special aunt, Mary Elizabeth Gray of Lanham, Md.; along with his soulmate of over 50 years, Davina Cook, also of Fayette City; 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a host of special nieces and nephews; and a play daughter, Jackie Sullivan of Augusta, Ga. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Epps and Laura Jane Jones; and one brother, Mickey Cook. “Sonny Cook” will be sorely missed by all that loved him. A public viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024, and from 10 to noon Monday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 230 Reed Ave., Monessen, PA 15062.
