Serra tops Clairton, moves into second-place tie

Iyanna Wade led all scorers with 26 points, but it wasn’t enough for the Bears (10-4, 8-2) to overcome a slow start. Clairton trailed 17-7 at the end of the first quarter and 34-24 at halftime, and couldn’t overcome the deficit in the final 16 minutes.
The Eagles (10-6, 8-2) played a strong game defensively to take Clairton from a tie with Geibel Catholic atop the section to a tie in second place with themselves. Niki Sfanos added 10 points in the victory.
Serra Catholic returns to the court against Mapletown tonight, while Clairton hosts Bishop Canevin at 6:30 p.m.
Girls Shady Side Academy 69, South Allegheny 16 Shady Side Academy picked up a lopsided Section 2-3A win at South Allegheny on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (17-0, 10-0) got 15 points from Cassie Sauer and nine more from Layla Bonner in the victory.
South Allegheny (2-13, 2-6) was paced by nine points from Ella Lotz and five more from Jaz Farnan.
Up next for SA is a trip to East Allegheny tonight.
Bishop Canevin 65, Monessen 14 Kya Cooley scored 23 points, Isabella Sysak had 19 and Gianna Matthews added 10 as Bishop Canevin ran away from Monessen.
Madison Johnson had 10 of Monessen’s (3-10, 1-8) 14 points as the squad struggled to find offense.
The Greyhounds will look to return to the win column tonight at West Greene.
Greensburg C.C. 60, McKeesport 29 Greensburg Central Catholic’s Erica Gribble led all scorers with 21 points and her teammate Jayla Peterson poured in 16 more to grab a nice nonsection win. Emily Eisenberg led the Tigers (4-13) with 13 points, but it wasn’t enough for McKeesport to keep pace.
The Tigers will get back to Section 2-5A play tonight against West Mifflin.
Boys Belle Vernon 71, Greensburg CC 51
Zion Moore dropped 25 points to lead the Leopards (15-4) to their second win of the weekend.
Belle Vernon was up 46-40 entering the final quarter of play before taking over the final eight minutes, scoring 25 points and allowing 11 to widen the margin of victory.
Liam Gallagher (12), Samir Crosby (11) and Brady O’Rourke (11) tried to keep pace with the Leopards, but they fell short down the stretch. BVA’s Trevor Kovatch added 16 points while Dom Ghilani ripped down 14 rebounds.
Belle Vernon will look to win its 10th game in a row Tuesday night at Elizabeth Forward.
NCAA Men Edinboro 93, California (Pa.) 85
California (Pa.) fell just short in a road contest at Edinboro on Saturday.
Despite 21 points from Donald Whitehead Jr. and Cam Polak, it was Edinboro (10-9, 6-6) that jumped ahead of the Vulcans (10-10, 5-7) in the PSAC West standings.
Edinboro took a three-point advantage into halftime and added five more points to their margin in the second-half to capture the close win. Steve Kelly led all scorers with 24 points while Evran Cenker scored 21. For Cal, Jordyn Buchanan added 19 and Keondre DeShields had 12.
Women Edinboro 80, California (Pa.) 79 The Vulcans had a chance to beat Edinboro at the buzzer, but they were unable to convert.
After jumping out to a 10-point advantage, Cal (10-9, 6-6) lost the middle two quarters by 11 points to trail 59-58 entering the final quarter.
McKeesport-native Rachael Manfredo, who is in her freshman year with the Fighting Scots (15-4, 102), saved her best for the local Vulcans. Her game-high 20 points were also a career-high as she shot 8 for 10 from the field.
Behind her were teammates Morgan Gentile (18), Ava Haddad (17), Hayley Sims (13) and Gabby Mc-Duffie (10).
For California (Pa.), Allycia Harris scored 18 points, Alicia Young had 16, and Talia Gilliard and Iyahnna Williams each added 13.
