• The Washington girls basketball team knew that the biggest threat it faced against Monessen was sophomore superstar Gina Naccarato. That’s why they assigned two players to cover her. The strategy had mixed results as Naccarato, who has been averaging 36 points per game, was held to just 16 points, her lowest output of the season. The Greyhounds’ other offensive threats, Beth Planey and Amber Williams thrived on the Prexies’ three-girl zone defense as Monessen won, 57-36.
• Belle Vernon Area’s football program got a boost from Craig Fayak years after her graduated. The place kicker, who just concluded his collegiate career at Penn State as the Nittany Lions’ all-time highest scorer, was named to the Hitachi-College Football Association Scholarship team. The honor includes a $1,000 grant to the player’s high school athletic program. BVA athletic director Jim Bush said the money will help purchase a computer for the exclusive use of the school’s athletic department.
