The Belle Vernon Area school board hired a new assistant principal for the high school at a special meeting Thursday.
The board gave unanimous approval to Justin Ward with an annual salary of $95,000. His start date will be determined by Superintendent Timothy Glasspool upon receiving all required testing and clearances.
Ward was formerly a teacher in the Laurel Highlands School District and was recognized with the 2024 Keystone Award of Excellence as a Pennsylvania Teacher of the year finalist.
Glasspool said Ward has nearly two decades of experience and will be an asset to the district.
“Throughout his tenure at the Laurel Highlands School District, Mr. Ward has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to academic excellence and student growth,” Glasspool said. “His leadership roles have ranged from classroom instruction in elementary and secondary education to gifted and life skills programming, providing him with a well-rounded understanding of diverse student needs.
“In addition to his teaching experience, he has actively contributed to professional development efforts, mentoring educators, leading technology integration initiatives, and presenting at educational conferences.”
Ward has received recognitions such as the NSTOY-PA “Apple Award” and the Golden Mustang Award for his efforts to provide an enriching educational environment.
Glasspool expressed excitement for Ward to become part of the “Leopard” team and welcomed him to the community during the special meeting.
“As an educational leader, Mr. Ward’s philosophy aligns seamlessly with Belle Vernon Area School District’s mission of providing all students with the support and opportunities they need to succeed,” he said. “We are confident that his expertise, leadership, and student-first approach will greatly benefit our school community.”
Glasspool added that in the coming days they will start introducing Ward to the community, families and parents.
The board unanimously voted to accept the resignation of former assistant principal Jamie Maksin at its Jan. 21 meeting. It wasn’t specified why Maksin resigned.
