• The Monessen School Board approved a five-year contract for Superintendent Dr. Cynthia Chelen. Chelen will receive $90,000 in the first year of the agreement and will receive the following amounts in following years: $94,000, $96,000, $101,500 and $104,500. Chelen took over the position last month when she was appointed acting superintendent. A lifelong Monessen resident, Chelen previously served as the district’s director of curriculum and instruction. School Board President Roberta Bergstedt said the salary is fair and comparable to that paid by neighboring districts.

• After just a week under private ownership, good things were happening at Brownsville General Hospital according to Mike Evans CEO of the acute care facility. Brownsville General Hospital was acquired last week by a group of investors led by Gary Gosai and several doctors, K. Gosai, A.J. Gandhi, D Gosai and R. Mehta.
• A crew was scheduled to demolish the former fabric building and Sears warehouse along the city’s riverfront according to Larry Larese of the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corp. This was the first phase of developing the city’s riverfront. Monessen Mayor Robert Leone said, “It’s just a matter of timing. We’ve been at this since I took office five years ago and things are finally starting to fall into place.”
