John E. ‘Moon’ Mullen – North Charleroi
John E. “Moon” Mullen, 97, of North Charleroi, passed away peacefully at home with his loving f ami l y by his side on March 15, 2025. John was born on March 30, 1927, in Charleroi to the late Peter and Florence Cronin Mullen. Catholic by faith, John was a member of Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish – Charleroi Site. After graduating Charleroi Area High School, Class of 1945, John served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. Prior to retirement, John worked for Wheeling- Pittsburgh Steel in Monessen. John was a dedicated and longtime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of AA and celebrated 61 years of sobriety with his family and friends. He was committed to providing guidance and sponsorship to many members of the AA organization. John was an avid golfer up to his 90s and achieved two holes-in-one throughout his lifetime. He was also a member of several golf and bowling leagues and loved playing euchre with his family and friends, who will miss him dearly. Always a music lover, those melodies became his daily joy in his later years. Surviving to cherish John’s memory are his children, Kathleen Turney, Peter (Sharle Wood) Mullen and Luanne (Duncan) Hyslop; his grandchildren, of whom he was so proud, Kaylee (Brian) Gmutza, Cassandra (Richard) Solomon, Meagan (Kyle) Joseph and Calum Hyslop; his great-grandchildren, whom he loved deeply and brought him great joy especially in his last days, Branden Gmutza, Maddie Solomon, Myah Solomon and Beau Solomon; his daughter-in-law, Laura Mullen; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Patricia Horvath Mullen; his sons, Robert Mullen and Dennis Mullen; and his son-in-law, David Turney. The family would like to send a special thank you to Naomi, Mary Ann, Amber, Marlene and Amedisys Hospice for their wonderful and delicate care for Mr. John Mullen. Friends and family will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at HOGAN-MELENYZER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES INC., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, PA 15022. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish – Charleroi Site, 826 Washington Ave. Interment will follow at Belle Vernon Cemetery.
