Epiphany Ladies of Epiphany of Our Lord Church in Monessen met in the church hall following the 10:30 a.m. Mass on March 9.
After leading the flag pledge and prayer to St. Michael, President Sara Stein welcomed members and introduced the month’s Corporal Work of Mercy, “Give drink to the thirsty.” She discussed both the necessity of water for physical life and the need for quenching spiritual thirst. The life of St. Peter Claver was explained as an example of both.
After the prayer before meals, lunch was served by March committee members Lisa Anderson, Lisa Nangle, Lianne DeFelices and Patti Francowic.
Secretary Susan Campus read minutes of the previous meeting and letters of thanks from both Catholic Charities USA and Brother’s Brother Foundation for donations.
Treasurer Alice Pastella gave the financial report. All were approved.
Welfare Chair Jackie Elias read a note of appreciation from the family of Joan Torok, and the passing of member Marsha Rocereta was noted.
Ways and Mean Chair Betty Geis gave a detailed report on the successful start of the Lenten fish fry. Kathy Byron, Diocesan Council of Catholic Women president, reported on the recent Lenten Day of Prayer and the availability of a few remaining reservations for the Our Lady of the Alleghenies Amtrak event.
Ruth Todd circulated the newly compiled organizational scrapbook.
Stein reminded members that volunteers will be needed for the April and May “Take and Eat” programs at St. Sebastian. She also discussed a request to assume sponsorship of the October “America Needs Fatima” Rosary Rally. While discussion will continue on the request, Stein shared the event’s website for more information and petitions opposing planned anti-Christian events across the country.
A motion to donate $500 to the parish heifer project was approved.
Stein announced that parish administrator, the Rev. Vincent Concepcion, agreed to serve as the organization’s chaplain. He further discussed “Give Drink to the Thirsty,” citing cultural and geographic differences in the availability and use of water. Using personal observations and experiences, he noted America’s “spiritual thirst” for caring and compassion in meeting the growing and unmet spiritual needs in this country.
Members congratulated Concepcion on the 23rd anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. He was given a floral bouquet, with a member- signed card promising a prayer attached to each blossom.
The meeting concluded with distribution of a prayer card with the Prayers from St. Patrick’s breastplate and awarding the half-the-take and the door prizes. Appreciation was extended to Sophia Janol and Ruth and Jamie Todd for the flowers for Mary’s Shrine. Vice President Jamie Todd led the closing Hail Mary prayers.
Resuming the usual schedule, the next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. April 8 in the church hall.
