A Ringgold student has been charged after a fight broke out in a classroom.
David Boyd McGavitt, 18, is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Ringgold School District Police said the fight took place around 7 a.m. Thursday.
Administrators told police that one student had been taken to the nurse’s office to be evaluated.
McGavitt was taken to the guidance office. He had visible injuries, bleeding from his chin, and was also evaluated by the nurse.
Police interviewed students in the class Thursday and Friday. Some students, who were not identified, told police that McGavitt said something to the other student, who was looking at his phone before he was punched.
The victim told police he posted something on Tik-Tok the night before regarding a former girlfriend who McGavitt was currently dating. The boy told police he was on the phone in class when McGavitt punched him.
The fight was broken up by a teacher, Martin Harris.
The boy was taken to Aspen Dental for a broken tooth and was diagnosed with a broken jaw. He went to Jefferson Hospital and was then transported to Allegheny General Hospital and told he needed a surgical repair.
McGavitt told police he and the other student had been having verbal issues for about nine months.
On the day of the incident, McGavitt told police the other student stood up like he wanted to fight, so he punched him.
McGavitt told police he was also hit in the chin and eye and went to the bathroom after the fight was broken up to clean himself up before he was escorted to the office.
