Cougars top Rebels in thriller

Todaro lined a two-out single to right field to score pinch-runner Jacob Fleming with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Runs were at a premium as Charleroi finished the game with only three hits.
Seton LaSalle got on the board in the top of the third inning when Ryan Kerr scored on an error.
The Cougars (5-1, 4-0) returned the favor in the bottom of the sixth when Dylan Klinger scored on an error to tie the game, setting the stage for the final inning’s heroics.
Charleroi starter Jake Corrin put on an impressive display on the mound, allowing seven hits and just one unearned run in a complete- game outing. The right-hander struck out six and walked only one. His counterpart, Anthony LoCastro, was just as formidable for Seton LaSalle, striking out eight and allowing just three hits and two runs (one earned) over 6 2/3 innings.
Jace Pager and Lazer Glasser each added hits for Charleroi.
Kerr and Mike Cejrowski led the charge with two hits apiece for the Rebels.
The teams face off again today for Game 2 of the series.
Gateway 3, McKeesport 2
The Gators’ Roman Jennings singled home Donovan Deluco in the top of the seventh inning for the go-ahead run and lift Gateway (51, 2-0) to a Section 4-5A win over the Tigers at Renzie Park.
Jennings got the win after tossing three innings of relief and only allowing one hit. He struck out eight.
Mason Michaels got the loss for the Tigers (0-7, 0-2). He pitched the seventh and allowed two hits and the game-winning run.
Caulan Smith added a double for McKeesport.
The Tigers will host Baldwin Monday.
Thomas Jefferson 7, Baldwin 2 Dom Metz tossed a complete game with five strikeouts and the Jaguars (3-2, 1-0) slugged a pair of homers to win their Section 4-5A opener against the Highlanders.
Noah Kaszer, Josh Chalovich and Eli Graff each had a pair of hits for the winners. Graff drove in a game-high three runs with Kaszer, Justin Fry and Damian Bosco driving in runs.
Aiden Robinson had a pair of hits, including a double for the Highlanders (1-3, 0-1).
The two teams meet on the Jaguars’ field today.
Eliz. Forward 5, Laurel Highlands 4 Cy Herchelroath struck out 11 through five innings to get the win as the Warriors (5-1, 2-1) were able to hold off the Mustangs to grab a Section 2-4A win at Wylie Field.
Charlie Nigut led the offense for the Warriors with three hits. AJ Grese added a double and a single with an RBI. Jacob Peterson drove in a pair of runs and Landon Jackson and Daniel Spence each added an RBI.

JB Crovak led the way for the Warriors in the win, going 5 for 5 with eight RBIs and three runs scored.
Crovak had a pair of singles, two doubles and a triple in the win. Jacob Peterson doubled with Charlie Nigut adding two hits and four runs scored in the win.
South Allegheny 6, Shady Side Academy 2
Dillon Pomocki had a two-run single and an RBI double to help lead the Gladiators to a win over the Bulldogs to split the season series Tuesday.
Josh Nesky added a double and Josh Jackowski returned from basketball season and added a pair of RBIs for South Allegheny (4-4, 1-1).
Hunter Fulmer got the win after throwing six strong innings. He allowed five hits and one run with eight strikeouts.
Brady Trischler got the loss for the Bulldogs (2-5, 1-1). The Gladiators travel to Keystone Oaks today.
Fort Cherry 11, Bentworth 0
Ben Demascal doubled and homered to finish with four RBIs as the Rangers (2-3, 2-1) hammered the Bearcats for a Section 1-2A win.
Colton Temple tossed a six-inning complete game to get the win for Fort Cherry. He allowed only two hits with nine strikeouts.
Lucas Burt was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs on only two hits. Only two runs were earned.
The defense was an issue for Bentworth (1-3, 1-2) as it committed five errors in the loss.
The two teams face off today for Game 2.
California 3, Burgettstown 1
The Trojans (1-3-1, 1-0) dealt the Blue Devils their first loss of the season behind a strong pitching performance from Caden Monticelli and Ricky Lawson.
Monticelli got the win after allowing only two hits through 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts.
Lawson came in to get the save. Lawson and Weston Monticelli each had two hits for California. Matthew Bredel got the loss for Burgettstown (3-1, 2-1). The teams meet again today at Malden Yards.
Softball Frazier 9, South Allegheny 4
Grace Vaughn and Grace Polkabla combined to go 7 for 7 as the Commodores finished with 14 hits in handing the Gladiators their first loss of the season Tuesday.
Vaughn finished with a double and three singles with Polkabla adding a pair of singles, triple and two RBIs.
Emme Travalena (single, double) and Morgan Fisher (triple) added extra-base hits for the Commodores (2-1).
Addison Hiles picked up the win with a complete game, two earned runs allowed and 12 strikeouts.
Ava Brown got the loss for the Gladiators (3-1) after allowing 11 hits, six earned runs in four innings.
Cam Colecchi had two hits, including a double, for South Allegheny. Carrera Conley had a pair of RBIs for the Glads.
Both teams are back in action today with the Gladiators hosting Serra Catholic and the Commodores hosting Mt. Pleasant.
Fr. Regional 6, McKeesport 4 (8)
The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to push past the Tigers in both teams’ Section 2-5A opener Tuesday.
Toryn Fulton homered, doubled and had three RBIs for Franklin Regional (3-2, 1-0).
Ryenn Thomas took the loss for McKeesport. She scattered eight hits and allowed six runs, five earned, with nine strikeouts.
Thomas led the offense with three hits. Addison Homer doubled. McKeesport travels to Armstrong today at 3:45 p.m.
Baldwin 3, Thomas Jefferson 0
Camryn Temme threw a one-hitter for the Highlanders, and delivered a homer with two RBIs as Baldwin claimed a Section 4-5A win over the Jaguars.
Melina Defelice doubled and Kaylee Smolko homered for the Highlanders (6-1, 2-0).
Aubrey Shaffer got the loss for TJ (2-2, 0-1). She allowed two earned runs and struck out nine in seven innings.
The Jaguars travel to Albert Gallatin today for a section matchup.
Jeannette 15, Monessen 3
Grace Stein struck out eight in the circle to get the win and delivered two hits, including a homer, and four RBIs as the Jayhawks routed the Greyhounds in Section 3-1A.
Abigail Shaw and Leah Defelice each had two RBIs for Jeannette (3-3, 1-0).
Joey Hurst took the loss for Monessen, despite only allowing four earned runs. Her defense committed five errors in the five-inning loss. Jaz’Mein Parker added a double and two RBIs for the Greyhounds (0-3, 0-1).
Monessen will host Ellis School Friday for a section game.
L. Highlands 17, Ringgold 3 (5)
The two through five hitters for the Mustangs combined for 10 hits as Laurel Highlands rolled over the Rams Tuesday in Section 2-4A play.
Payton Rambo, Kendra Firestone and Liv McClelland each finished with three hits for the Mustangs (2-3, 1-0).
Chloe Komacko had two hits, both doubles, with four RBIs and Izzy Coleman doubled, homered and three RBIs for the winners. Kayla Howell added a home run and three RBIs for LH.
Megan Powell had a pair of RBIs and Addy Allen drove in a run with two hits for Ringgold (0-7, 0-1).
Ringgold travels to Elizabeth Forward today for a section game.
Jeff-Morgan 10, California 0
Gabby Marmie had four hits, including two doubles and a homer, and drove in three runs as the Rockets shut out the Trojans in a non-section game Tuesday.
Emilee Bazzoli had two hits and got the win in the circle for the Rockets (3-1). She allowed four hits and 13 strikeouts.
Kayla Saeli had two hits and Avery Filby doubled for California (2-2).
Gabbi Luncinski took the loss after allowing 10 earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.
The Trojans are back in action Friday when they travel to Frazier to open section play.
