Two dogs found in boxes in December and brought to White Oak Animal Safe Haven have found a new home.
PETA offered a $5,000 reward in January for information related to two young adult female miniature pinschers found Dec. 27 in taped-up boxes left outside the Giant Eagle in White Oak.
The dogs were adopted by a Pittsburgh family in January, according to White Oak Animal Safe Haven President Laura Massie, who said the dogs were taped into individual boxes in the Giant Eagle parking lot, but they were not sure where the animals were found.
“We did contact Giant Eagle, and they did review their cameras,” Massie said in January. “They said they weren’t able to see anything, so I’m not sure where they were dropped because we weren’t able to see anything.” The boxes were brought to White Oak Animal Safe Haven after the dogs were discovered inside, according to White Oak Animal Safe Haven’s Facebook page. They were named Flora and Fable by the shelter and were given time to recover from their trauma before being put up for adoption.
No suspects were identified, so PETA is asking for the public’s help. There have been some leads over the past few months regarding what happened with the dogs, but nothing has panned out.
Massie has spoken with White Oak Police, and they cannot do much about the situation. She is glad the dogs have found a new home.
According to Massie, the dogs were not malnourished, but one had diarrhea, possibly due to stress.
White Oak Animal Safe Haven took the dogs to their veterinarians and their final vet care through them was March 4.
“They got spayed, they got released from the doctor, they are doing good in their new home,” Massie said. “This isn’t anything new for us, and it is sad. Giant Eagle said they didn’t catch any pictures of anybody leaving them, so unfortunately, the cops said there wasn’t much that they could do.”
According to the new owners, who wish to remain anonymous, both dogs they adopted together are doing great and are “hilarious.”
“They were not fans of the cold winter weather so they now have a custom built, indoor play yard in their new home,” they said. “On sunny days, they enjoy walks with their awesome humans and their ‘big dog’ neighbor friends.”
White Oak Animal Safe Haven, a no-kill shelter has been open since 2003, and has been finding homes for “thousands of pets,” according to its website, is run by volunteers, donors and sponsors to find loving homes for pets with all types of backgrounds.
Anyone with information about the dogs, or who left them outside the store, is asked to contact White Oak Police at 412-672-9726 or White Oak Animal Safe Haven at 412-672-8901.
