Falcons shut out Bearcats
The Brownsville softball team returned to their home field and bounced back from a shut-out loss at Frazier by dominating section foe Bentworth behind the arm of Ava Clark Friday afternoon.
Clark, the Falcons’ junior fire-baller, pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts to lead her team to a 5-0 win over the usual heavy-hitting Bearcats.

Clark, the Falcons’ junior fire-baller, pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts to lead her team to a 5-0 win over the usual heavy-hitting Bearcats.
Brownsville scored three in the second inning on Skyler Gates’ triple, Blair Long’s single and Lena Rechichar’s single, each driving in a run.
The Falcons (4-3, 1-1) added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Lyla Gill scored on a bunt by Blair Long to make it 4-0.
After striking out the side in the top of the fifth, Clark helped her cause with an RBI single to plate the game’s final run.
Clark, Gates and Emma Leigh Bailey each had two hits for Brownsville, which collected 11 total. Long drove in two runs. The Falcons played error-free, with Long handling 15 chances at catcher.
Kyleigh Glaze had Bentworth’s only hit. Willow Eckels took the loss, allowing five runs on 11 hits over six innings with six strikeouts. She didn’t walk a batter.
The Bearcats (4-4, 1-1) will be back in action Tuesday at home against Washington.
South Allegheny 16, Shady Side Academy 0
The Gladiators hammered out 17 hits, including nine for extra bases, as they crushed the Bulldogs (1-4, 1-3) in a Section 2-2A contest.
Cadence McBride led the offense with four hits, including a pair of triples, a double and three RBIs for the Gladiators (6-1, 2-0).
Carrera Conley added a pair of doubles, a triple and three RBIs of her own. Cam Colecchi, Angelina LaGuardia, Sydney Gordon and Ava Brown each added two hits for SA. Sydney Gordon doubled and had three RBIs in the win.
Brown got the win in the circle. She threw a five-inning complete game and allowed only five singles.
South Allegheny stays in section play Monday on the road at Apollo-Ridge.
West Mifflin 3, L. Highlands 2 A three-spot in the bottom of the third inning was enough for the Titans as they held of the Mustangs to extend their winning streak to five games and remain unbeaten in Section 2-4A action.
Rylie Dobnak tossed a three-hitter to get the win for West Mifflin (7-3, 5-0) as she didn’t allow an earned run and struck out 13.
Abby Jakubovic and Taylor Krivanek each drove in runs for the Titans.
Payton Senge took the loss for the Mustangs (3-5, 2-2) after allowing three runs over four innings. She walked five and struck out four.
Both teams finished with only three hits. West Mifflin travels to Elizabeth Forward Monday for an early battle for first place in the section.
Latrobe 7, McKeesport 1
Mya McHugh did it all for the Wildcats as they picked up a win over the visiting Tigers on a chilly night.
McHugh allowed only two hits and a lone run in the circle to get the win. At the plate, she delivered two hits – a double and solo homer – to push her team to the win.
Sara Blossey had two singles and a triple and teammate Natalia Scekeres had a single, double and two RBIs for Latrobe (6-4, 3-2).
Ryenn Thomas took the loss for McKeesport (1-5, 0-3) after allowing seven runs, five earned, on eight hits in six innings. Esiah Harper drove in the only run for the Tigers in the top of the sixth inning.
McKeesport hosts Gateway Monday at 6 p.m.
Baseball Serra Catholic 10, West. Beaver 1
The Eagles got on the field for the first time in 10 days and were able to shake off any rust and top visiting Western Beaver Friday at Port Vue.
Chris Johnson doubled and had a pair of RBIs, and Jake Holmes and Jake Anderson each drove in two runs for Serra Catholic.
Tyler Skaggs got the win in the mound tossing three innings and allowing three hits.
The Golden Beavers (5-4) picked up their lone run in the top of the first on Sawyer Chaffee’s solo homer.
The Eagle (7-2) are back in section play Monday to open a series against Clairton on the road.
Volleyball McKeesport 3, Summit Academy 0
The Tigers picked up another win in section play as they swept visiting Summit Academy.
Game scores were 25-9, 25-7, 25-22.
