Shirley Ann Zahand East Millsboro, Pa., formerly of Elco
Shirley Ann Zahand, 91, of East Millsboro, Pa., formerly of Elco, died Saturday, June 17, 2023. Born on Sept. 21, 1931, in Swoyersville, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Anne Nasser Habib. Shirley was a member of St. Ellien Antiochian Orthodox Church, the Roscoe American Legion and The Center in the Woods. She proudly served her country in the mid-1950s in the Women’s Army Corps, where she met her husband. With the encouragement of her husband, she returned to school at the age of 50. Upon completion, she worked throughout the Mon Valley as a registered nurse. She volunteered at the Center in the Woods, planning and leading seniors on bus trips. She was president of the California Area School District School Board twice in her lifetime, an election poll worker and volunteered as a nurse in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Abraham Zahand; two brothers, Peter Habib and Phillip Habib; two sisters, Barbara Harrington and Charlotte Moore; and son-in-law, Kenneth Weakland. She is survived by her sister, Eileen Habib of Uniontown. Also left to continue her legacy are seven children, Beth (Ronald) Readd of East Millsboro, Pa., Lynn (Michael) McDowell of Lancaster, Pa., Georgene (Curtis) Glasscock of Clarksville, Va., Cindy Zellie of Allenport, Pa., Bud (Vicki) Zahand of Houston, Texas, Shirley Weakland of California, Pa., and Michael Zahand of Spartanburg, S.C.; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Friends were received at MARISCOTTI FUNERAL HOME, INC., Anthony N. Mariscotti, supervisor, 323 Fourth St., California, Pa., from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2023, and will be received from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2023, with funeral services immediately following officiated by Father Fred Pfeil. Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park where the Roscoe American Legion will accord military honors. Assisting in officiating at the interment will be her grandson, Pastor Lucas Glasscock of The House of Prayer, Clarksville, Va.
