Donora Council discussed the future of a recently shuttered borough personal care home at a special meeting Wednesday.
Miller’s Corner Cottage owner Charles Miller and administrator Judy Faidley attended the meeting to tell their side of the story.
The Kenric Avenue personal care home, formerly known as Kenric Manor, made headlines last week after relatives of residents started calling the borough building alleging their loved ones had been moved and the families were not aware of their current location.
Donora Solicitor Steve Toprani said both staff and patients started leaving after an undated letter was sent to families stating the facility would close within 30 days.
On Saturday, several of the remaining employees told officials they walked out after their most recent paychecks bounced.
Toprani said 13 of the remaining residents began hastily evacuating on Saturday with the help of staff and family members, and eight residents who remained in the home over the weekend were to be relocated to other facilities by 5 p.m. Monday.
Faidley said they voluntarily closed the business for financial reasons.
“Most of the stuff that happened we already discussed with the Department of Health before any of this happened,” Faidley said. “We told them ‘Hey, we’re voluntarily closing not due to anything in the home.’”
