Fifth-seeded Serra Catholic overcame early shooting woes and used its stingy defense to claim a 59-29 victory over No. 12 Sto-Rox in a WPIAL Class 2A first round matchup at Peters Township Friday.

The Eagles (18-4), who advance to the quarterfinals Thursday to face No. 4 Our Lady of Sacred Heart, shot 30 percent from the field in the first half before converting on 14 of their 28 shots in the final 16 minutes.

“We fell in love with the 3-point line in the first half and didn’t go inside nearly enough as we should,” said Serra Catholic head coach Bill Cleary, whose team went 1 for 9 from long range in the first half.

“I told them at halftime, ‘We gotta get the ball inside, that’s just the long and short of it.’ Once we started going inside, it started opening up everything else.”
