Belle Vernon Area scored five runs in the final four innings, but couldn’t overcome West Mifflin’s early offensive explosion in an 11-5 Section 2-4A loss at Tom Rodriguez Field in Washington Township Thursday afternoon.

The Titans (4-0, 2-0) scored eight runs on seven hits in the first two innings to set the tone offensively before extending its lead to as many as 10 runs in the fourth.

“I was hoping we could keep them to four or five runs but they hit the ball and hit the ball in to the gaps,” BVA head coach Tom Rodriguez said. “Getting down 8-0 in the first two innings was tough.”

Lauren Yuhas helped get the scoring started as she led off the game with a double to center field. After Allyssa Schmidt grounded out, allowing Yuhas to move up to third, Emma Mackulin hit an infield single and later stole second base to put runners on second and third with one out.
