It appears Republicans are back in the driver’s seat on the Washington County Board of Commissioners.
Holding onto their seats were Republican Diana Irey Vaughn, who at presstime, was the top vote getter with 23,489 votes (28%) and Democrat Larry Maggi with 21,662 votes (25.8%), according to unofficial results from the Washington County Election Bureau.
Republican newcomer Nick Sherman unseated Democrat incumbent Harlan Shober with 20,342 votes (24.3%) to Shober’s 17,845 votes (21.3%) according to unofficial results.
Sherman’s victory gives Republicans the majority rule in the Washington County Commissioner’s office.
“This isn’t a message of being a Republican or Democrat, this is a message of elected officials helping people,” Sherman said after his victory speech at Bistecca Steakhouse at the Meadowls Racetrack & Casino in Washington County. “From day one, I’ll be using Diana’s experience to fix the human services problems we have. We have grandparents raising their grandchildren because of our opioid crisis.”
