Despite knowing they wouldn’t qualify for the postseason, the Cal U football team rallied around 12 seniors on senior day and got a solid defensive effort early to set the tone in a 28-14 victory over Seton Hill University Saturday at Adamson Stadium.

The Vulcans’ heartbreaking 31-28 loss to nationally ranked Slippery Rock University last week ended any hopes for the playoffs this season.

“It was disappointing last week for our guys,” Cal coach Gary Dunn said. “It took us a couple of days in practice to get back to our normal routine. But the guys knew how important this game was for our senior class. Seton Hill was going to be a grind-out, type of win and we did enough.”

The Vulcans (7-3, 5-2) improved to 8-0 all-time against the Griffins. The win also gave Cal seven on the season and they have had at least that many each year since 2005.

“It was bittersweet today,” said Lamont McPhatter, one of those seniors, who have a combined 172 starts at Cal U. “It was nice to end our home careers with a win. We’ve put a lot of hard work on this field. Nothing changed this week; we still approach it the same and wanted a win.”
