Businesses are returning to Donora and a new chamber of commerce may not be far behind.
Over the last year or so, Tech Met has reinvested in its MIDA Park site and expanded its operations. Early Bird diner opened on McKean Avenue. Junk and Disorderly reopened in a new location on McKean. A new tattoo parlor, High Society, opened, and a new business is opening soon in the 500 block of McKean Avenue. A woodworker bought the Elks building and plans to open soon as well.
Mayor Jim McDonough said he will send a letter of intent to all the businesses throughout the downtown area to gauge interest in starting a chamber of commerce to get independent business owners working together.
McDonough believes this will show other potential business owners that Donora is growing and can turn the downtown area into more of a shopping experience.
The downtown corridor has seen significant improvements recently. Bright new LED lighting has been installed between Fifth and Sixth streets, the light poles were painted and restored and the facades of many businesses have been improved.
