Local basketball fans in a packed Charleroi gymnasium were treated to an instant classic in the championship game of the CFSBank Holiday Classic Saturday night.

With a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter, Belle Vernon Area’s Devin Whitlock scored three straight points and Cam Nusser hit a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left to help push the Leopards to a 66-60 win over bitter rival Ringgold.

It was the first of three meetings of the teams this season.

“This was probably the closest we’ve come to playing a full four quarters so far this season,” BVA head coach Joe Salvino said. “We got off to a good start and went out there and played. I mean, as a player, if you can’t get yourself up for this game. … We were ready.”
