The Ringgold girls basketball team had Belle Vernon Area right where they wanted them, but once again, the Leopards were able to squeak out a Section 3-4A win over their cross-river rivals.

The Rams were held without a point over the final 3:15 and the Leopards hit 7 of 8 free throws over the final 2:22 to claim an ugly 32-27 win.

“In my two years here, I think this is the proudest I’ve ever been of my team,” Rams coach Lindsy Muchnock said. “Unfortunately, we came out on the losing end after another tough game against them. I think our lack of experience kind of got us in the end, but we had our chances.”

Mikayla Byczynski and Nya Adams each had shots to give the Rams the lead, and Jada Cathers came up with an offensive rebound for the Rams after an Adams’ layup attempt, but BVA’s Farrah Reader got a held ball and the ball went back to the Leopards.

Taylor Rodriguez stepped to the line and hit both ends of a 1-and-1 to make it 30-27.
