This afternoon, the Belle Vernon Area boys basketball team will take the floor for the program’s first shot at a WPIAL championship in 42 years.

The No. 6-seeded Leopards (19-6) will face No. 1 Highlands (21-3) at 1 p.m. at Pitt’s Petersen Events Center for the Class 4A title.

The Golden Rams knocked off Blackhawk, 53-45, in their semifinal. BVA is coming off a 56-46 win over New Castle in its semifinal.

“The kids are very loose and have been very good at practice,” BVA head coach Joe Salvino said. “They’re extremely excited, but really, who isn’t going to be happy. You’re playing for a championship. You have to enjoy the moment and I hope they take advantage when they get the chance tomorrow.”
