In the wake of the COVID-19 emergency, the borough of Glassport adopted a declaration of disaster this week.
The borough also made a provision that if a state, county or national emergency requires the cancellation of scheduled council meetings, the proper borough officials are authorized to process and pay all regular payroll, bills and debts owed by the borough that become due during the state of emergency, subject to ratification by the borough council.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Councilman Paul Trunzo encouraged residents who are experiencing symptoms of the virus and have to call 911 to tell the dispatcher and make the emergency personnel aware by placing a note on the outside door of their home.
“There have been emergency crews affected by this virus and quarantined for 14 days in other states,” he said. We need to keep our police, fire and emergency services safe.”
With closures due to the virus emergency, council President Elaina Skiba said any resident who is self-quarantined and in need groceries can call the borough office and leave a message. The Glassport Senior Center is closed, but any senior citizen who needs assistance may call the center and leave a message and someone will get back to them.
Council adopted amendments to the Dumpster and street-storage unit ordinance. The amendment will require residents to have $50,000 liability insurance and remove all liability from the borough on any Dumpster or street storage unit placed on the street or right of way. These changes will not affect any Dumpsters or street storage units placed on residents’ property.
In other business, council:
• Adopted an amendment to the street restoration standards ordinance. The amendment changes the standard from 20 feet from the center line to the restoration must be from curb to curb.
• Announced the grand re-opening of the Dari-Delite ice cream store has been moved from March 28 to 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 18. The event will be open to the public and will include a DJ, food and more.
