Nearly 2 miles of aging water mains in Monongahela will be replaced, and work begins this week.

Pennsylvania American Water announced the start of a $1.7 million water system upgrade, saying the work will improve reliability and fire protection for residents.

This project is part of a $6.4 million investment in the company’s Mon Valley service area.

Monongahela Mayor Greg Garry said he knows residents will be surprised and inconvenienced by the service interruptions, but the work must be done.

“They should be happy they’ll have good water service and no water-main breaks,” Garry said. “Be happy with the progress.”
