The McKeesport Area School District will utilize a portion of federal CARES Act relief aid to ensure students have a way to access online learning materials remotely for next school year and beyond.
When Gov. Tom Wolf announced April 9 that all Pennsylvania public and private K-12 schools would be physically closed to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, school entities across the Commonwealth that were not fully 1:1 capable were forced to quickly spring into action and come up with ways to ensure all of their students had access to learning materials.
In the context of education, 1:1 computing refers to academic institutions providing each student with an electronic device, such as an iPad, laptop, electronic tablet or Google Chromebook, in order to access the internet, digital course materials, grades and digital textbooks.
The devices are typically used by students both in school and at home and are returned at the end of the school year.
Some schools and individual students are using the pencil and paper method via packets prepared by teachers.
