It will likely cost about $3.5 million to build a necessary sewage equalization holding tank in Monessen, but the city doesn’t intend to raise any fees for residents.
The city has been in violation of a state Department of Environmental Protection corrective action plan since 2014 because the tank has not been built. According to Mayor Matt Shorraw, the DEP has been patient with Monessen but the city doesn’t want to push it much further.
The mayor and council members Don Gregor, Tony Orzechowski and Lois Thomas met Tuesday with Mon Valley Sewage Authority Board members Paul Berardelli, Lewis Marraccini, Tommy Thompson, Catherine Tucker and Brooke Farmer, who attended by phone. City Councilman Gil Coles did not attend.
City Administrator John Harhai and Solicitor Tim Witt also attended, along with authority Solicitor Aaron Bialon, Engineer Jason McBride and General Manager Thomas Salak.
