Recreation is on the minds of the Rostraver Township Commissioners.
A dedication ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the new playground in Collinsburg. The park was the focus of this year’s Small Park Revitalization program in the township. Next year’s focus will be on a new recreational facility at Elk’s Place in Pricedale, replacing houses in a floodplain as part of the township’s flood-mitigation plan for that area.
The plan calls for approximately $264,000 of improvements to the Elk’s Place property, including construction of basketball and pickleball courts and a picnic pavilion. Part of the cost of the work will come from flood mitigation funds, according to township planner Tamira Spedaliere
“We couldn’t put in a playground where there would be mulch, so we went with hard surfaces that could withstand flooding,” Spedaliere said.
Commission Chairman John Lorenzo said the size of the property will allow for future expansion as funding becomes available.
Lorenzo called for action regarding the start of work on a walking trail and pavilion at the DiVirgilio Sports Complex. Spedaliere said quotes obtained for that project expire at the end of the year.
“This has been talked about for over a year and we haven’t broken ground on it yet. We need to get moving on this,” Lorenzo said.
