Clairton’s Dontae Sanders had what some would call a phenomenal year.
The senior tailback ran for nearly 1,900 yards and scored 32 touchdowns for the Bears, who once again made it back to the WPIAL Class A championship game for the second straight year.
Couple those statistics with the fact that he did those things in just nine games and it becomes far more impressive.
But, add in that he did it while only playing the first half in most contests, it becomes downright unbelievable.
The honors have continued to pour in for Sanders, who was named All-Eastern Conference and All-State. Now, he can add the Mon Valley Independent-BeeGraphix Co-Offensive Player of the Year Award to his long list of accomplishments.
An impressive season was cut slightly short not only by the COVID-19 pandemic, but by an injury against Jeannette in the WPIAL title game against, one that forced the senior out of his final game at Clairton.
“It’s truly well deserved, he’s such a good kid,” Clairton head coach Wayne Wade said. “I felt bad for him last year because he suffered a knee injury. Then, he was having a great year this year and he hurt his shoulder in the championship game.”
“To get all the accolades it is great,” Sanders said. “I knew I was going to get them, I worked too hard for it. The season went well, it didn’t end how I wanted it to, but we played hard for our city.”
