New Eagle is beginning the process of making landlords and owners of leased property responsible for payment of their property’s garbage fees.

At a meeting Tuesday, council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would make refuse collection payment the responsibility of the landlord, regardless of whether the property is leased to other individuals.

Solicitor Tim Berggren said the ordinance doesn’t affect just payment for garbage collection fees.

“The refuse container must be covered,” he said.

The ordinance will have a second reading at next month’s meeting, when it can be made law.

Also Tuesday, council rejected a bid from Big’s Sanitation to be the borough’s garbage collector.

Council made the motion after Berggren did not approve of the sanitation company’s final bid, which didn’t include a bid for one of the borough’s options for garbage collection.

Berggren refused to comment publicly on the matter.

Council also agreed to open the borough building to the public again starting Feb. 1. It has been closed since late last year due to COVID-19 concerns.
