Two Mon Valley communities will be a bit safer thanks to funding from a local nonprofit organization.

The Mon Valley Alliance Foundation recently announced a series of grants that will help local municipalities combat crime and drug problems in local communities. Charleroi and Speers are the first municipalities to benefit from the program.

Each community will receive $2,500 for the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of security cameras that will be connected into the local police stations. Charleroi Regional Police provides service to both communities.

Combined with previous grants, which total $7,500, the MVAF has awarded a total of $12,500 to area communities to enhance safety.

The grants have been made possible with support from the FirstEnergy Foundation, which as the parent company of West Penn Power, provides electric service to customers throughout the Mon Valley.
