Allegheny County’s Learn & Earn program will kick off in a couple of weeks, and low-income young adults who are interested need to apply by Friday.

That’s the deadline for the summer youth employment program, and work begins June 21.

It’s for low-income young people who are 14 to 24 years old and live in Allegheny County. It’s a six-week program.

Learn & Earn is meant to provide meaningful work experiences, mentorship and career exposure. There are 22 community-based organizations that will implement the program this summer.

“Learn & Earn provides us the opportunity to equitably invest in our most important asset — our young people who are the talent that will define our region’s future,” said City of Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto.

Because 2020 presented new challenges, it forced partners to reimagine the program in a manner that kept young people engaged and inspired, regardless of their physical location.

This year’s program will once again involve a blended model of in-person and virtual work opportunities for its participants to ensure safety and comfort for all.

“It has been a long year, and we are just as excited as everyone else to return to some sense of normalcy, and that is particularly true for our youth,” said County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “We’re excited to see the return of the Learn & Earn program, and grateful to our many partners for their flexibility in providing both in-person and virtual opportunities.”
