“You can have a good call for 47 minutes and 52 seconds, but if you mess up those last eight seconds, you stink.” This is the reality for high school referees in the WPIAL and across the state and country regardless of the sport, the situation or the importance of the occasion. Any mistake – or perceived mistake – and you’ll immediately be informed of it by boos and hollering fans or profanities from coaches; the job’s performance evaluation happens in real time.
