Blighted Monessen buildings torn down

The old Valley Independent building at 123-129 Sixth St. in Monessen has been demolished and completely cleaned up. The First Christian Church congregation next door had to leave under threat of the building further collapsing, but now the doors are adorned with Christmas wreaths.

The mass demolitions that are coming Monessen’s way courtesy of Westmoreland County’s decision to spend a chunk of its American Rescue Program dollars on blight removal have started and more progress is likely to come soon. The former Fifth Street Hotel has been brought down and just needs to be cleared. Mayor Ron Mozer said that should be done before the end of this week.
