Belle Vernon Area got rid of some demons Friday night with a 24-7 win over Avonworth for its first WPIAL championship since 1995. Just ask defensive coordinator Brett Berish. “I’m a Belle Vernon alumnus,” Berish said. “I lost in the semifinals on Nov. 17, 1989 to Aliquippa. That stays with you the rest of your life. To win, I couldn’t be more proud of the coaches and kids, and I got to enjoy it with my 80-year old father.”
