Firefighter is first female deputy chief at Blaine Hill

The Blaine Hill Volunteer Fire Company made history on Thursday when it named longtime firefighter Mercedesz Lexus as its new deputy fire chief. Lexus, who has been part of the department for the last 11 years after joining as a junior firefighter at 14, is the first female deputy chief in the company’s history. “It’s definitely an honor, especially in the community let alone with my fellow firemen, to be awarded this title,” Lexus said. “This shows that I’ve earned their trust, and I feel like this is one of my biggest accomplishments. Being a female at a fire station, you get underestimated a lot, so being able to prove those people wrong feels great.”
