House GOP divided in vote for speaker

The U.S. House of Representatives failed to select a new Speaker through three rounds of voting Tuesday, as majority Republicans split on which party leader to back. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., supported by the vast majority of House Republicans, had been tapped as the leading candidate for months before the vote. But a breakaway group of conservatives, many of whom align themselves with former president Donald Trump, blocked McCarthy’s appointment.
