Students and faculty of the Young Scholars of Greater Allegheny (YSGA) Charter School gathered this week to celebrate “A Turkish Night with a Spanish Twist.” The event represents the school’s unique approach to education.
The evening started with a buffet-style dinner featuring many Turkish delicacies and a Spanish dessert bar. The selection included pide (Turkish flat bread), gyro meat, stuffed grape leaves, kisir (Turkish cracked wheat salad), pogaca (Turkish cheese buns), lentils, and biber dolmasi (Turkish style stuffed peppers).
For dessert, guests could choose from several types of flan, a selection of Spanish style pastries, and a variety of imported soft drinks. Everyone in the school’s cafeteria enjoyed the food and socializing with the other parents and school staff.
After enjoying the delicious meal the families adjourned to several of the school’s classrooms to enjoy a program of Turkish, and Spanish music while looking at displays of items related to Turkish and Hispanic culture.
The YSGA is located in the former 11th Ward Elementary School on Center Avenue in Versailles Borough. The school’s 304 students are drawn from 14 area school districts ranging from the Pittsburgh Public Schools to areas in Westmoreland County. The school has students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
