On Wednesday, we celebrated the 37th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD).
The goal of NGWSD is to inspire girls and women to be active and play sports. This special day recognizes the positive influence of sports participation in our lives and the continued need for equality for women in sports.
In 2022, we marked the 50th anniversary of Title IX and its influence on girls and women in sports.
In 1971, before Title IX passed, only 1% of college athletic budgets went to women’s sports. In high schools, male athletes outnumbered female athletes 12 1/2 to 1. While fewer teams, fewer scholarships, and lower budgets are available to female athletes still today, female participation in high schools has grown by 1057% and by 614% in colleges.
