The Charleroi girls soccer team got off to a bit of a slow start against their cross-river rival Monessen Wednesday night, watching as the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into their Section 2-1A contest at Myron Pottios Stadium.
It served as a wake-up call, though, for the Cougars as they went on to score four straight goals en route to an 8-2 win.
“A slow start is right, but I think we found our stride there after they scored that opening goal,” Charleroi head coach Tom Cameron said. “It was total opposite of the SA game Monday. Started fast there, started slow tonight.”
Sam Saylor scored both Monessen goals in the first half, opening the scoring with a left-footed shot that beat Charleroi keeper Addison Conrad to her right.
“It was a real good start for us,” Monessen coach Matt Strine said. “But I agree that it was like Sam was out there by herself at times tonight. A lot of watching her do things instead of support.”
