Charleroi Council will hold off on hiring much-needed new employees in the street department for at least another two weeks.
Last week’s lengthy agenda included a few contradictory topics up for discussion: a potential moratorium on hiring and a request to hire new street department employees.
Council President Frank Paterra proposed the moratorium as the borough prepares for new council members to take office next year, though it was not on Wednesday’s agenda for a vote and Paterra was absent from the meeting.
Last week, Councilman Larry Celaschi, personnel committee chairman, proposed hiring two street laborers and a street foreman.
Following a brief executive session last night, council tabled hiring any new employees.
Prior to the decision to table the vote, resident Kristen Hopkins-Calcek, a candidate for council in next month’s general election, urged council to hold off on making any hiring decisions.
