Private Ross Naccarato and his colleagues probably didn’t know what hit them on the morning of Jan. 26, 1944. Operation Shingle, the Allied amphibious landings at Anzio, had begun four days earlier. More than 36,000 troops had already made it ashore. Their objective was to outflank the German Army from the west and enable an Allied attack northward to Rome.
