After a six-day layoff for Elizabeth Forward, the Warriors took West Mifflin to extra innings but ultimately dropped a tough 3-2 decision to open section play Wednesday.

After each squad scored two runs a piece in the first two innings, the Titans (5-1, 1-0) plated the winning run in the bottom of the eighth as Jake Cannon scored Chase Maggio to capture the victory.

Elizabeth Forward was credited with five errors in cold and wet weather, but despite the result for the Warriors (3-1, 0-1), coach Frank Champ remained optimistic about the way his squad played.

“I thought we played well,” Champ said. “I thought we hit the ball very well. I thought we started off well, and I thought our pitchers pitched well. There’s nothing to hang our heads about after that, because that game could’ve gone either way. That was only one section game, and there’s a long road ahead. Any loss is tough and we have some errors to clean up. But there’s a long way to go.”
